WALNUTS
These oil rich nuts are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids as well as manganese, iron, copper magnesium and phosphorous. They are grown by Fairtrade farmers in Chile
There are 24 species of walnuts, grouped under the genus, Juglans which had an original meaning in its first form of 'Jupiter's acorn' in English; it means a nut which is fit for God. The nutritional value of walnuts exceeds that of many different nuts.
Walnuts are considered an important food source, due to the high content of omega-3
fatty acids. More than 90.% of our daily requirement on Omega 3 can be met by eating
¼ cup walnuts. These nuts are also rich in mono saturated fats. Fats account for
60% of the walnut, with 10% of the content carbohydrate.
Walnuts also contain vital
proteins and vitamins. It is also rich in vitamins B and E and has a high content
of vitamin B2, beta carotene and folate. Interestingly it has higher levels of protein
than eggs at 24%.
Minerals present include copper, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron and phosphorus.
The ellagic acid present helps to support the immune system and potentially has anti-cancer
properties.
